As a military spouse for 24 years, I raised my kids away from my family. It was hard!
Being alone while trying to figure out how to get your child to sleep, how to discipline them while maintaining connection, trying to feed them, wipe their bottoms, and keep them from getting hurt. It was a lot to handle emotionally when you don't have a support system in place!
My family was across oceans and so phone calls would have to suffice.
It all changed, when we were stationed in Georgia, I met a dear friend who told me that if I want community, I must make it. That has stuck with me for years and years. Her wisdom just made sense.
I now had the option to stay in my home and wish I had community surrounding me, or I could go do something about it. She started a monthly get together of like minded moms and we built a strong friendship among us!
Now, wherever I end up, I start something in my area. Something that connects me to others. Let me encourage you in this. It's not easy, it sometimes feels like you are the only one making an effort. However, I'm gonna lovingly push you, if you need community, get out there and create it! ❤️
Here are some ideas:
1. Start a book club (even if you never read the book, still gather!)
2. Invite other moms over for a play date at your house or meet at a park.
3. Put on a pot of tea, or uncork some wine, and invite other moms to sit and chat.
4. Invite a mom to walk with you, exercise is a fabulous way to connect!
5. Start a Bunco club, oh the laughter that happens at Bunco 😂
I tend to like gatherings that have no agenda. Why, because as a mom, there is already so much agenda in my life.
If you need a good place to start, make sure to join my moms community on FB, Parenting with Purpose, it's a great place to find like-minded support and a loving and fun community of moms.
God Bless You Mom! I know it can be hard to be the one to initiate community, but go for it! You got this!
In love,
Tami
